Semester One 2018

Monday nights starting 26th February

6pm – 7.30pm

Limited to first 30 participants

The Te Reo Māori Language Course for Beginners is part of Carey’s commitment to the bicultural journey.

The class is fun, interactive and focussed mainly on developing listening and speaking skills.

In the process of learning the basics of te reo Māori we discover who Māori are as tāngata whenua (people of the land) and how relationships might be forged and faith shared.

We will learn how to mihi (greet people), say pepeha (introduce ourselves and our families), read and recite karakia (prayers), sing waiata (including songs specifically composed for Carey Baptist College). We also learn whakataukī (appropriate proverbs for sermons and mihi), kīwaha (idiomatic sayings) and about whānau (describing our family relationships), whenua (landmarks of Tamaki Makaurau) and marae (tikanga Māori).

$100.00 per person

Whaea Lorraine Taogaga – Experienced Kaiako (teacher)

Welcome to those of you who have chosen to learn Te Reo Māori.
My name is Whaea Lorraine Taogaga. I have been a teacher for nearly twenty years.
I taught Te Reo Māori at Auckland Girls’ Grammar School and also taught Te Reo Māori at Carey Baptist College in 2017. I am currently completing a Masters of Theology at Laidlaw College. I am really looking forward to meeting you all as we walk this language journey together.

Let me leave with you with this whakatauki (proverb) from the Māori language.

“He waka eke noa.”
(We are all in this together with no exceptions.)
