Library FAQ

Do you have a library guide?

If not, view the Library Guide here

How do I do a basic search?

There are two search options available by selecting one of the following tabs on the library web page: Library Catalogue search – for all items held in the Carey library. Enter search term(s) in the search box. This may be word(s) in the title, author, subject, any other keyword(s), or a combination of these. Discovery search. This is a search across the catalogue, journal databases and more. Search by keywords, author, or select from the drop down box to search by item title.

Do I need a Library card?

If you are a student, your Carey ID card is your library card. If you are a subscription member, we will create a library card for you. The number on your library card is used for logging on to the library catalogue resources.

What are my login details?

Your ID Number is the barcode number on your Carey library card. Your Password is the last four digits of that same number. This is the login to use for the library catalogue. Login setup details for OpenAthens are emailed to all new students. Contact the if you need help with this.

How do I access ebooks?

Either: Go to the Library Catalogue, login on the top right. Search for the ebook and click on its Web Address.  Login to OpenAthens (details emailed to you – contact the library if you need help). Or: Ebooks can also be found by doing a Discovery search – to access the full text, you will need your OpenAthens login.

Where do I search for journal articles?

Go to the Journal Databases page / do a Discovery search. Enter in the search box a topic, author or other keywords. To search for an article by its title, first select Title from the drop down options. On the search results screen, half way down the Refine Results column on the left, select a Source Type – e.g. Academic Journals.

How do I reserve a book?

Go to the Library Catalogue, login using your ID number and password. Search for the item you want. Select required item from the search results list by ticking box to left of title. Click Reserve button (the book and padlock icon). On the next screen click Reserve save button (disk icon).

Can I renew my books?

Yes you can if the item has not been reserved by another borrower.  Go to the Library Catalogue, login using your ID number and password.  Click Current Loans.  Tick Renew button to right of listed item, or select Renew all loans icon.

I am not sure how to reference my sources.

Carey uses a style referred to as Society of Biblical Literature (SBL).  For more information, please look at the SBL Style referencing resources available through CareyOnline.

I am a distance student and I need to read a chapter of a book which is held in the Closed Reserve collection. Can I have the pages posted to me?

Library staff can scan and email up to 10% or one chapter of a book (whichever is greater) to distance students.

The book I want to refer to is out and my assignment is due soon. What can I do?

Check the title in Discovery search to see whether the ebook is available. You may also wish to check on Google Preview. Feel free to contact the librarians.
