Learn, grow, and be transformed – wherever you are!

CareyLocal is a cohort-mode of teaching designed to build biblical foundations for church volunteers, ministry and mission leaders, and anyone wanting to grow in their discipleship. Different NZQA-accredited courses are offered each year, and cover theology, biblical studies, pastoral care, and mission. They are offered at level 5 on the NZQA framework for credit.

SEMESTER ONE

Both our Mission of God and Introduction to Pastoral Care are on offer in Semester 1, 2025 (3 March-27 June) by distance and can be utilised by CareyLocal groups (or independent students) on a weekday evening of choice. The courses will be recorded on the day they are delivered and made available for viewing the following day.

MISSION OF GOD (Monday)
Emma Stokes
In this course we explore the biblical story and trace God’s mission and the formation of God’s people in the narrative. We evaluate examples of how God’s mission has been, and is being interpreted and carried out, and consider what this means for our participation today. Various strands of learning in Bible, theology, spirituality, history, culture and society, and the practice of ministry and mission are introduced with a common orientation towards knowing and serving God within the community of God’s people as participants in God’s mission.
INTRODUCTION TO PASTORAL CARE (Wednesday)
Phil Halstead
This course introduces learners to the theory and practice of pastoral care in a Christian framework involving an exploration of the biblical, theological, historical, and psychological underpinnings of pastoral care and the role that self-awareness and self-care plays in the lives of pastoral care givers. Several issues that are frequently encountered in pastoral care such as crises, grief, cancer and questions on listening to God are explored.

SEMESTER TWO

Introduction to Christian Leadership

In Semester 2, 2025 (21 July–14 November) we are offering the Certificate in Christian Leadership (Micro-credential). This was first offered in 2024 to over 150 students in response to an identified need for quality, accessible, local Christian leadership training with a particular focus on human participation in God’s leadership. Carey’s world-class scholar-practitioners provide in-depth biblical and practical training from their own areas of expertise, enabling learners to discover practical solutions to the leadership challenges they are facing in their specific contexts.
This micro-credential is an NZQA-approved Level 5 course of 15 credits offered over 12 weeks (plus study breaks). Delivery includes weekly online lectures (Tuesdays, 7-9pm) on Zoom for CareyLocal cohorts gathering together across Aoteraroa, New Zealand.

How to apply

Initial registration of interest in CareyLocal should be directed to your church or organisation leader, who will liaise with Carey to establish a cohort. You can then apply for your chosen course.

If you are wanting to study with a CareyLocal cohort, approach your church or organisation leaders.

Alternatively, contact us and we will see if there is a cohort in your local area which you can join.

All CareyLocal courses are  NZQA-accredited and offered at level 5 on the NZQA framework. All study is for credit. This involves completing the entire course including all assessments. Students will spend two hours a week at the evening session and can expect to commit up to a further seven hours a week to reading and preparing for lectures and assignments.

In each course students will normally be given three assessment tasks. These can be a combination of online tasks, online forum participation, quizzes, creative assignments, and/or written tasks and essays. These assessments are spread over the 17-week semester and are uploaded via our online learning portal—Carey Online.

Students will be given resources to use and are also expected to access our library resources.
